All-Space Filling

The question of which polyhedra pack to fill space with no gaps -- answered in synergetics by the Mite (Minimum Tetrahedron), its assemblies the Sytes and Couplers, and the 24-tetravolume Duo-tet Cube that completes what the vector equilibrium's 20-ness alone cannot.

Fuller's Definition

The Mite (Minimum Tetrahedron) is "two A Quanta Modules and one B Quanta Module" joined into an asymmetric tetrahedron that is the simplest all-space filler in Universe (§953.10). Mites can be positive or negative, "affording a beautiful confirmation of negative Universe," and each sign can independently fill all space "but with quite different energy consequences" (§953.20). Two Mites combine into a Syte953.40), and Sytes build up into Couplers -- all of them all-space fillers composed entirely of module-counted units.

The vector equilibrium's 20 tetravolumes represent "maximum somethingness" but do not fill allspace by themselves. Fuller pairs 20-ness with 24-ness: "The maximum somethingness of the VE's 20-ness does not fill allspace, but the 24-tetravolume Duo-tet Cube does fill allspace" (§1033.701). The Duo-tet Cube (double-tetrahedron cube) adds an exterior octahedron's 4 tetravolumes to the VE's 20, yielding the 24-ness "requisite for the consideration of total atomic behavior" (§1033.74). This complementarity of 20 and 24 -- maximum somethingness plus its allspace-filling completion -- is what Fuller calls the "cosmic hierarchy of rational and symmetrical click-stop holding patterns" (§1033.75).

Significance in Synergetics

All-space filling matters because it determines which forms can account for the total behavior of physical Universe. The cube and rhombic dodecahedron fill space but are not minimal; the Mite, at just three modules (1/8 of a tetrahedron), is the minimum tessellator. The 20-versus-24 complementarity explains why the VE, despite being the equilibrium reference, requires the Duo-tet Cube's additional 4 tetravolumes to model complete energy-packing behavior. Fuller draws an analogy to the 92 self-regenerative chemical elements: 24 times 4 = 96, minus the 4 of the "disappearing octa set," yields 92 (§1033.704).
