Research: Philosophers in Fuller's Corpus

Fuller was not a citation-builder; he engaged philosophers in three distinct ways. (1) As inherited lineage — the New England Transcendentalists (Emerson, Thoreau) entered through his great-aunt Margaret Fuller, Emerson's friend and co-founder of The Dial, whom Bucky reprinted ("Margaret Fuller's Prophecy") and treated as a personal "spiritual heritage." (2) As method/idiom — Korzybski's general semantics (language must mirror the structure of events) and Alfred North Whitehead (the source of Fuller's named "Whitehead's Dilemma") supplied the process-oriented, "no nouns, only verbs" outlook that the dictionary's editor classified outright as Fuller's Neo-Platonism. (3) As figures to correct or reframe — Descartes (whose 720° angular-topology discovery Fuller claimed to complete with the tetrahedron, and whose XYZ "Cartesian" coordinates he replaced with 60-degree coordination), Aristotle (blamed for the "practical philosophy" that ushered in 1,700 years of geocentric mis-seeing), and Newton vs. Einstein (Newton "a noun," Einstein "a verb"). Plato dominates raw counts but almost entirely as the geometric "Platonic solids," not the philosopher. His deepest, most affectionate affinity is Transcendentalist; his operative method is process-philosophical and general-semantic.

Method

• Entry point was grep -riIE --include="*.md" across the whole repo (book directories by and about Fuller, the Synergetics Dictionary, and .wiki/wiki/topics/), excluding .git and node_modules, over a curated philosopher list plus scientist–philosophers (Newton, Galileo, Einstein, Eddington) who function philosophically in Fuller.
• Raw counts were cleaned with word boundaries to strip substring noise (e.g. Locke → "blocked/locked"; Plato → "platonic"). For polluted names I re-ran with disambiguating patterns (e.g. platonic solids vs. Plato-the-philosopher).
• Each surviving name was read in context (-B/-A) in prose books and dictionary cards to separate genuine engagement (Fuller argues with / builds on / reframes) from list-name-drops, and to tag each passage BY-Fuller vs ABOUT-Fuller.
• The Synergetics Dictionary was treated as edited-primary Fuller (its "RBF DEFINITIONS / Index Entry" cards transcribe Fuller's own words, compiled by E. J. Applewhite). See ../datasets/synergetics-dictionary/MANIFEST.md.

Fuller's philosophical engagements (synthesis)

Genuinely engaged (argues with, builds on, or reframes):

• Margaret Fuller (great-aunt; Transcendentalism). The single most personal engagement. Bucky reprinted her 1842 essay as a chapter, "Margaret Fuller's Prophecy," in Ideas and Integrities, called her his "great-aunt," kept her chair for "special bouts of concentration," and framed her as the one nineteenth-century intellectual who welcomed industrialization rather than recoiling from it. Multiple ABOUT-Fuller scholars (Eastham, new-views essayist) treat her, with Emerson, as Fuller's "spiritual heritage."
• Ralph Waldo Emerson & Henry David Thoreau (Transcendentalism). Emerson is named by Eastham as literally "one of Fuller's intellectual progenitors"; Applewhite says Fuller, "like Emerson… keeps his antennae poked into the cosmos." Fuller himself invokes Emerson and Thoreau (via C. P. Snow's Two Cultures) to make his recurring argument about the literary-vs-scientific chasm. Engagement is more affinity/lineage than argument, but it is sustained and self-claimed.
• Alfred North Whitehead (process philosophy / education). Fuller coined and repeatedly used "Whitehead's Dilemma" — built on Whitehead's observation that graduate schools produce non-communicating specialists, leaving integration "to the not-so-brights." This is a named concept Fuller carried for decades. (His "no nouns, only verbs" universe is also broadly Whiteheadian process thinking, though Fuller does not cite Process and Reality.)
• Alfred Korzybski (general semantics). Directly cited in the Synergetics introduction (the "rose" single-tagging example) and given his own dictionary card quoting Science and Sanity: "A language… must at least have the structure of the events it attempts to describe." Korzybski underwrites Fuller's verb-based, structure-mirroring language program.
• Descartes (mathematics/metaphysics, to extend and to oppose). Fuller credits Descartes as "the first of record to have discovered that the sum of the angles of a polyhedron is [720°]" — then claims Descartes "didn't realize it was the tetrahedron," extending him via Coxeter. Edmondson (A Fuller Explanation) notes Fuller renamed Descartes' "angular topology." Separately, Fuller's whole synergetic geometry is pitched against the Cartesian XYZ coordinate system.
• Aristotle (critically, as villain of "practical philosophy"). In Critical Path Fuller blames "Plato's pupil Aristotle… and the latter's practical philosophy" for the geocentric conditioning that "drew the curtains on science for 1700 years."
• Pythagoras (mathematics + moral history). Treated as a world-historical hinge alongside Buddha ("sixth century B.C.… mathematical tools and philosophic break-throughs for individual humans"). Heavy count also reflects "Pythagorean" geometry.
• Newton & Einstein (scientist-philosophers, reframed). Fuller's signature line — "Newton was a noun And Einstein is a verb" — appears across several BY-Fuller books, expanded in Earth, Inc.: "Newton's instant, noun-thing Universe has been replaced with Einstein's scenario, verb-event, wave-frequency Universe." This noun→verb shift is the load-bearing move of Fuller's metaphysics. The dictionary carries dozens of Einstein/Newton cards.

Named-only / peripheral:

• Bertrand Russell — named as one of the "intellectual soul mates" (with Einstein, Ford) to whom Fuller mailed 4D Time Lock; no engagement with Russell's philosophy (ABOUT-Fuller).
• Plato (as philosopher) — overwhelmingly "Platonic solids" (geometry). The one substantive Timaeus discussion is in The Man Who Saved Geometry, a book about Coxeter, not Fuller.
• Wittgenstein — the substantive quotation ("one learns correct judgments…") is in The Design Way (Nelson & Stolterman), a design-theory book in the repo, not Fuller. Fuller does not engage Wittgenstein.
• Kant, Hegel, Spinoza, Leibniz, Hume, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Bergson, Socrates, Heraclitus, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Aquinas, Augustine, Locke — appear mostly as names in historical lists, bibliographies, or others' framing; no sustained Fuller argument located.

Interpretive shape: Editor E. J. Applewhite formally indexed Fuller's metaphysics under "Fuller, R.B.: His Neo-Platonism" and "Neo-Platonism," cross-referencing "Ideal vs. Real," "Reality as Structural Interaction of Principles," and "World as Idea in the Mind of God." So the through-line is coherent: a Transcendentalist temperament (Margaret Fuller/Emerson) + a process/general-semantics method (Whitehead/Korzybski, "only verbs") + a mathematical Neo-Platonism (eternal principles, ideal polyhedra) — defined against Cartesian coordinates, Aristotelian "practicality," and Newtonian static "nouns."

Distribution

Counts are whole-repo *.md hits for the curated list (word-boundary cleaned; dictionary duplication noted below). They index presence, not engagement depth.

Notes (honesty)

• Curated list bias. Distribution reflects the philosopher list searched (the prompt's list plus a few I added: Newton, Galileo, Copernicus, Darwin, Einstein, Eddington, Leonardo). Other thinkers Fuller named in passing will exist outside it.
• Voice-mixing across the repo. The corpus mixes Fuller's own books, biographies/criticism about him, and unrelated books that merely share the shelf. Two names are inflated by non-Fuller books: Wittgenstein (almost entirely The Design Way, a design-theory text) and the philosophical Plato/Timaeus discussion (The Man Who Saved Geometry, a Coxeter biography). I have flagged these inline.
• Dictionary duplication. Two parallel copies of the Synergetics Dictionary exist in-repo (synergetics-dictionary/<letter>/<cardID>.md, synergetics_dictionary/cards/…, and rolled-up synergetics_dictionary/<LETTER>.md). A single card therefore hits 2–3 times, inflating raw counts (notably Whitehead, Einstein, Korzybski). Header cards (e.g. "Neo-Platonism," "Newton Was a Noun") are navigation-only; substance lives in numbered sibling cards.
• OCR noise. Book .md files carry OCR/markup artifacts (<span class="ec-…">, broken hyphenation, German footnotes in We Are All Astronauts). Quotes above are transcribed as found; minor spans were elided for readability without changing wording.
• Raw-count caveats. "Plato" and "Descartes" counts are dominated by the geometric idioms ("Platonic solids," "Cartesian coordinates"), and "Locke" raw counts were ~520 almost entirely from substrings ("blocked/locked"). These were corrected before tabulation.
• Grep-located, context-read. Every claim above was located by grep and then confirmed by reading the surrounding passage; nothing is asserted from counts alone, and no quote was synthesized.
