- 1858--1937 — Albert Gleaves, U.S. Navy admiral, commands the Cruiser and Transport Force during World War I -- a contemporary of the era shaping Fuller's early naval service.
- 1861--1910 — Richard Buckminster Fuller Sr., Bucky's father, a Boston leather and tea importer, dies when Fuller is fourteen, leaving him fatherless during his formative years.

- 1917 — Marries Anne Hewlett, daughter of architect James Monroe Hewlett. Enters the U.S. Navy during World War I; serves on patrol boats and as an aide at the Naval Academy. His naval experience instills the systems thinking and command-of-the-whole outlook that will pervade his later work.
- 1918 — Daughter Alexandra born. The influenza pandemic sweeps the world; Fuller witnesses its devastation firsthand.
- 1919 — Discharged from the Navy. Begins work with his father-in-law Hewlett on the Stockade Building System, a lightweight building-block venture.
- 1922 — Alexandra dies at age four, after infantile paralysis and spinal meningitis worsened by cold, damp housing the family could afford. The loss becomes a formative grief behind Fuller's lifelong preoccupation with adequate shelter, human health, and doing "more with less."
III. The Crisis & Dymaxion Era (1922--1946)
- Early 1920s — Fuller works to develop and market the Stockade Building System; the venture grows but he is ousted from the company by the Celotex Corporation.
- 1927 — The turning point. At the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, near-suicidal after business failure and personal despair, Fuller resolves that "you do not belong to you. You belong to the universe." He commits to a lifelong experiment -- "Guinea Pig B" -- to discover what one penniless individual could do on behalf of all humanity. Daughter Allegra born August 28; the family moves to Chicago.
- 1927--28 — Writes 4D Time Lock, his foundational text laying out industrialized, mass-produced housing. Develops the 4D House concept, later branded Dymaxion (a contraction of dynamic, maximum, and tension, coined by a department-store publicist). - 1944 — Files U.S. Patent for the Dymaxion Map (the Cartography patent, issued 1946) -- the only patent ever granted for a cartographic projection. Two Building Construction patents cover the DDU.
- 1944--46 — The Wichita House (Dymaxion Dwelling Machine). Fuller contracts with Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas, which has surplus aluminum after WWII. Two prototypes completed by 1946 (the Barwise and Danbury units), but Fuller refuses to ship an imperfect first run. V. World Figure & Counterculture Icon (1968--1975)
- 1968 — Stewart Brand launches the Whole Earth Catalog, making Fuller its patron saint and intellectual keystone. The Catalog channels Fuller's do-more-with-less, whole-systems ethos to the counterculture generation. Brand's Portola Institute is the nonprofit publisher.
