Antoine Picon is a French-American historian of architecture, engineering, and technology whose scholarship spans the Enlightenment roots of modern engineering through the digital transformations reshaping contemporary cities. A specialist in French engineering history, digital culture, and smart urbanism, he has authored books on Claude Perrault, the Saint-Simonians, French engineers of the Enlightenment, and digital design. He also co-edited the Dictionnaire des Utopies.

As the G. Ware Travelstead Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Picon brings an unusually wide historical lens to questions about technology, utopia, and the built environment -- the same nexus of concerns that defined Buckminster Fuller's career.

Relationship to Fuller

Relationship: chronicler. Picon contributed the essay "A View from the Present" to Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe (Whitney Museum of American Art, 2008), the major Fuller retrospective catalog co-edited by K. Michael Hays and Dana Miller. His essay explores two interpretive frames for R. Buckminster Fuller: Fuller as a forerunner of digital culture -- the "Digital Fuller" fascinated by information flows, statistics, visualization, and the strategic thinking demanded by an information society -- and Fuller as utopian, not in the sense of a fixed ideal city but as an advocate of utopia as an open-ended, individually empowering process. Picon traces Fuller's prescience from his 1920s Dymaxion proposals through the World Game, arguing that Fuller anticipated the fundamental ambivalence of the information age: its oscillation between individual freedom and the need for coordination and control.
