Eduard Franz Sekler was an architecture historian and theorist who spent the majority of his career at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he taught from 1956 until his retirement. Born in Vienna, he studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule Wien and art history at the University of Vienna, bringing a distinctly Central European intellectual formation to the American academy. His scholarly work focused on the relationship between structural expression and architectural meaning, and his influential essay "Structure, construction, tectonics" — originally published in the Kepes anthology — became a foundational text in architectural theory, establishing a precise vocabulary for distinguishing between the physical fact of structure, the process of construction, and the expressive quality of tectonics.

Sekler's major monograph, Josef Hoffmann: The Architectural Work (1985), was recognized as the definitive study of the Viennese architect. He was also deeply engaged in international development and cultural preservation, founding the Harvard program for development work in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal and contributing to UNESCO heritage projects. His teaching and mentorship at Harvard influenced generations of architects and historians.

Relationship to Fuller

Relationship: co-contributor. Sekler contributed "Structure, construction, tectonics" to Structure in Art and in Science (1965), the Gyorgy Kepes-edited anthology in which R. Buckminster Fuller contributed "Conceptuality of Fundamental Structures." Sekler's essay drew careful distinctions between structural reality, constructional method, and tectonic expression in architecture, offering a theoretical framework that complemented the anthology's investigation of how structure operates across art and engineering.
