Maria Gough

Art history professor; formerly at Stanford University, later at Harvard University; specialist in Russian constructivism and twentieth-century art.

Maria Gough is an art historian specializing in the Russian and Soviet avant-garde and twentieth-century art more broadly. At the time of the anthology's publication, she was an associate professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Stanford University; she later joined the faculty at Harvard University. Her book The Artist as Producer: Russian Constructivism in Revolution was published by the University of California Press in 2005, and she has published widely in journals and exhibition catalogs. Her research interests include the work of El Lissitzky and Gustavs Klucis, extreme drawing practices in the twentieth century, and the afterlife of 1920s avant-garde movements in the 1950s and 1960s.

Relationship to Fuller

Relationship: chronicler. Gough contributed the essay "Backyard Landing: Three Structures by Buckminster Fuller" to New Views on R. Buckminster Fuller. The essay investigates questions of attribution and collaboration in R. Buckminster Fuller's architectural work, particularly as exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1959. Gough suggests that while Fuller's ideas added new grist to the modern architectural discourse, he may have left unpaid debts among former students who were not always properly credited for their often fundamental role in his design innovations. Her art-historical perspective brings a critical lens to the collaborative dynamics behind Fuller's structures.
