Pier Luigi Nervi was one of the twentieth century's most accomplished structural engineers, celebrated for his inventive use of reinforced and prestressed concrete to create buildings of extraordinary structural daring and formal elegance. Trained at the University of Bologna, he established his own construction firm in 1920 and spent the next six decades designing and building hangars, stadiums, exhibition halls, and public buildings across Italy and beyond. His municipal stadium in Florence (1930–32), the aircraft hangars at Orvieto (1935–42, destroyed in the war), and the Palazzetto dello Sport for the 1960 Rome Olympics are among the landmarks of twentieth-century engineering.

Nervi developed a proprietary material, ferrocement (ferro-cemento), which allowed thin, lightweight concrete shells to be formed over wire mesh, enabling complex curved surfaces to be constructed economically. He was also a gifted teacher and writer; his books Aesthetics and Technology in Building (1965) and Structures (1956) argued that structural honesty and efficiency naturally produce beauty. He held visiting professorships at Harvard and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal from RIBA and the AIA Gold Medal.

Relationship to Fuller

Relationship: co-contributor. Nervi contributed "Is architecture moving toward unchangeable forms?" to Structure in Art and in Science (1965), the Gyorgy Kepes-edited anthology in which R. Buckminster Fuller contributed "Conceptuality of Fundamental Structures." Nervi's essay questioned whether the logic of structural efficiency leads architecture toward universal, invariant forms — a provocative inquiry that paralleled Fuller's own search for fundamental structural principles, albeit from the perspective of a practicing builder rather than a systems theorist.
