R. Buckminster Fuller Archival Collections

Fuller's papers, models, and media are distributed across multiple institutions. The primary archive is at Stanford University, with significant holdings at Southern Illinois University, the Henry Ford Museum, Virginia Tech, and several smaller collections. Stanford University (M1090) -- Primary Archive

The R. Buckminster Fuller Papers at Stanford University Libraries constitute the definitive Fuller archive. The Smithsonian Institution described them in 1976 as "the most extensive personal archive in existence."

Provenance: Fuller deposited his papers at SIU Morris Library beginning in 1960, during his years as a research professor. The collection was transferred to Stanford in 1999.

Southern Illinois University

SIU retained materials distinct from the Stanford transfer, organized in 5 series:

SIU's unique holdings include physical models of geodesic and tensegrity structures that Fuller created or supervised during his tenure as research professor (1959-1970), as well as World Game instructional materials.

Henry Ford Museum

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, holds the only surviving Dymaxion House prototype:

3,600+ individual parts salvaged from two original prototypes
Restoration completed October 24, 2001, at a cost of approximately $1 million
Displayed as a permanent walk-through exhibit
The house was originally assembled in Wichita, Kansas; it was dismantled in 1992 and reassembled at the museum

Buckminster Fuller Institute

The BFI, founded in 1983 and based at 2261 Market Street #469, San Francisco, CA 94114, functions as a resource hub rather than a primary archive:
