Recent Fuller Scholarship and Developments (2020-2026)

A survey of post-2020 developments in Fuller scholarship, preservation, exhibition, and institutional activity — from the first comprehensive biography to 3D-printed visitor centers and the relaunch of the World Game.

The period from 2020 to 2026 has seen a notable acceleration in Fuller-related activity across publishing, museum exhibitions, preservation, and institutional evolution. Alec Nevala-Lee's 2022 biography brought critical rigor to Fuller studies for the first time. Major museums mounted exhibitions placing Fuller in architectural and environmental history. Southern Illinois University completed restoration of Fuller's dome home and hosted a five-day Fuller Futures Festival. The Buckminster Fuller Institute expanded into active design-science initiatives while its original Challenge prize was archived.

Major Publications

Alec Nevala-Lee's Inventor of the Future (Dey Street Books / HarperCollins, August 2, 2022) is the first authoritative biography to cover all aspects of Fuller's career. At 672 pages, it draws on thousands of previously unpublished documents from the Stanford archive, providing the most thoroughly researched account of Fuller's life to date. Nevala-Lee critically reassesses Fuller's self-mythologizing tendencies, his appropriation of student work, and his tumultuous private life alongside his genuine contributions to structural engineering, design thinking, and environmental awareness.

The biography received wide recognition: a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, inclusion in Esquire's 50 Best Biographies of All Time, and The Economist's Best Books of 2022.

Museum Exhibitions

MoMA "Emerging Ecologies" (2023-2024) — "Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism" ran from September 17, 2023 through January 20, 2024 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was the first major museum exhibition to survey the intersection of architecture and the environmental movement in the United States, featuring over 150 works spanning the 1930s through the 1990s. Fuller appeared in the "Enclosed Ecologies" section alongside architects Beverly Willis and Emilio Ambasz. A published catalog was authored by Carson Chan and Matthew Wagstaffe.

MAC Lyon Permanent Collection — The Musee d'Art Contemporain de Lyon acquired two Fuller domes for its permanent collection: the "Bear Island Dome" (1965) and the "Great Circle Dome" (1960), donated by the Fuller Estate. Reconstruction was supervised by Jaime Snyder, Fuller's grandson. The museum frames the domes as simultaneously "architectural project, utopian form, work of art, sculpture and structure" — a characterization that captures the multivalent nature of Fuller's output.

Festivals and Events

Fuller Futures Festival 2026 (SIU Carbondale) — A five-day festival held April 22-26, 2026, co-organized by Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the Buckminster Fuller Institute. The centerpiece was a relaunch of the World Game on a 50+ foot Dymaxion Map, led by Medard Gabel, who collaborated with Fuller on the original 1971 version. Thomas T.K. Zung, Fuller's sole remaining architectural partner, presented. The festival included a theater performance of D.W. Jacobs' "Buckminster Fuller: The History and Mystery of the Universe." Admission was free for students.

Five Days of Fuller (SIUE, March 2025) — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville hosted a conference at its Fuller Dome, with continued programming including Kool Koor's "AXION SYMMETRA" exhibition (June-September 2026) and World Peace Game sessions on a 27-foot Dymaxion Map.

Preservation and Heritage

The restoration and expansion of Fuller's Carbondale dome home — the R. Buckminster Fuller and Anne Hewlett Dome Home — has progressed through multiple phases. Phase 1 (structural and exterior) and Phase 2 (interior restoration) are complete. A 2,400 square foot visitor center was constructed using Mighty Buildings' 3D-printed parametric panels, reducing construction waste by 99% and using 60% recycled materials. It is one of only three 3D-printed buildings in the Midwest.

Phase 3, currently in progress, will add museum exhibits and establish an artist/scholar-in-residence program, ensuring the site serves as both a historic landmark and a living center for design-science activity.

Institutional Evolution

The Buckminster Fuller Institute has evolved beyond its traditional role as archive and educational organization into active design-science initiative work:

  • BiOFi (Bioregional Financing Facilities) Project — designing financial infrastructure for bioregional economies
  • Indigenous Rewilding Network — connecting Indigenous land stewardship with design science principles
  • COBALT (Collaborative for Bioregional Action, Learning, and Transformation) — a collaborative initiative for bioregional organizing
  • Regenerosity — transitioned to an independent nonprofit in 2025, continuing its work in generosity-based economic models

The original Buckminster Fuller Challenge, a $100,000 prize awarded from 2007 to 2017 for comprehensive design-science solutions, has been archived as an educational resource, its function absorbed into the broader Design Lab program.
