Fly's Eye Dome
A self-sufficient dwelling that needs no utility hookups — Fuller's last major shelter invention, named for the compound eye of the fly.
Buckminster Fuller designed and patented the Fly's Eye Dome in 1965, calling it an "autonomous dwelling machine." The name comes from the dome's array of circular openings, which evoke the faceted structure of a fly's compound eye. Those openings are functional, not decorative: Fuller intended them to hold solar panels, wind turbines, and water collection systems, so the structure could operate entirely off-grid. The shell is made from a single repeating modular piece of glass fiber reinforced polyester (FRP), bolted together to form a complete sphere. The concept represented Fuller's most direct attempt to merge geodesic geometry with total self-sufficiency.
Three fiberglass prototypes were built by hand between 1977 and 1983 in 12-foot, 24-foot, and 50-foot diameters. The smallest is now owned by the architect Norman Foster. The 24-foot version, owned by developer Craig Robins, was installed in the Miami Design District in 2014. The largest, at 50 feet, was acquired by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and installed on its grounds in 2017. Fuller died in 1983 before fully realizing his vision for the dome as a mass-produced dwelling, and only five prototypes are known to exist worldwide.
In the years since, several groups have worked to advance the concept. BFI, Goetz Composites, ConformLab, and DRDesign launched a program to complete Fuller's design using modern materials. More recently, Massive Dimension explored 3D printing a Fly's Eye Dome from PLA filament, producing 60 interlocking pieces joined by mortise-and-tenon connections and weighing roughly 1,200 pounds assembled. The dome's vulnerabilities have also been demonstrated: in February 2026, a Fly's Eye Dome at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton collapsed under heavy snow and sustained freezing temperatures. Lloyd Kahn, who studied dome construction extensively during the 1970s, acknowledged "as-yet-unsolved detail and weatherproofing problems" — a caution that remains relevant decades later.
