The question of who invented tensegrity is one of the most contested attribution disputes in twentieth-century design. The short answer, supported by the weight of modern scholarship, is that Kenneth Snelson built the first tensegrity structure in December 1948, that R. Buckminster Fuller encountered it the following summer at Black Mountain College, coined the word "tensegrity" around 1955, and progressively claimed the concept as his own — a pattern Snelson fought against for the rest of his life.

In the summer of 1948, Snelson attended Black Mountain College to study painting with Josef Albers. Albers recognized his three-dimensional aptitude — "this is the work of a sculptor, which was news to me" — and directed him toward Fuller, who had arrived as a last-minute faculty replacement. Snelson was "absolutely hypnotized and electrified" by Fuller's inaugural lecture on synergetic geometry. He spent the rest of the summer as, in his own words, "a Fullerite."

That winter, back at the University of Oregon, Snelson worked obsessively with thread, wire, clay, and metal scraps, making kinetic sculptures. In December 1948 he built the "Early X Piece": two wooden X-shaped forms connected only by nylon fishing line, with the compression elements completely free of one another — suspended in a web of tension. It was rigid, self-supporting, and gravity-independent. It was the first tensegrity structure. The discovery emerged from artistic experimentation — "play aimed at making mobile sculptures" — not from engineering theory or Fuller's prior work.

In the summer of 1949, Snelson returned to Black Mountain and showed Fuller the X-Piece. According to Snelson's account (published in the International Journal of Space Structures, 1990), Fuller studied the sculpture, turned it over in his hands, and asked to take it home. The next day he told Snelson the configuration was "wrong" and asked him to replace the X-modules with tetrahedra. Snelson complied. Fuller then had his picture taken with the modified structure — a photograph that later appeared in publications without mentioning Snelson. "I felt instinctively that I had been preempted or something," Snelson recalled.

Fuller coined "tensegrity" (tensional integrity) around 1955 — five years after first seeing Snelson's work. In Snelson's assessment: "Creating this strange name was his strategy for appropriating the idea as his own." He understood that "if you create a name for something, if you can give something an odd name and have that name stick, the name becomes the thing." Fuller obtained U.S. Patent No. 3,063,521 ("Tensile-Integrity Structures"), filed 1959, granted 1962. Snelson's name does not appear in the patent. In response, Snelson filed his own patent — U.S. Patent No. 3,169,611 ("Continuous Tension, Discontinuous Compression Structures"), granted 1965 — explicitly "as a way to claim prior invention."

Fuller's published framing was consistently reductive. In his essay "Tensegrity," he described Snelson's contribution as "an extraordinary intuitive assist at an important moment in my exploration" — casting the inventor as a helper in Fuller's own project. He claimed prior conceptual work on discontinuous compression since the 1920s, citing the solar system, the wire wheel, and the Dymaxion House mast as precursors. Snelson's rebuttal was direct: Fuller retroactively reframed different earlier work as tensegrity precursors. The Dymaxion House used continuous compression augmented by tension cables — fundamentally different from true tensegrity, where compression members float free in a network of tension.

A December 23, 1949 letter from Fuller to Snelson — "The name Ken Snelson will come to be known as a true pioneer" — was the only documented acknowledgment. Fuller gradually ceased crediting Snelson by name. When the Museum of Modern Art held a Fuller exhibition in 1959 that included tensegrity structures, Snelson confronted the museum: "But is my name going to be on it?" The label was corrected to read "original idea of Kenneth Snelson."

Snelson rejected the word "tensegrity" and preferred his own term, "floating compression," to avoid carrying Fuller's imprimatur. In the 1967 Artforum interview — the first major public airing of the dispute — he said: "It isn't that I have to protest, but it is annoying when people come up to me and say, 'Oh, Bucky's thing, I am awfully glad that somebody is doing something with it.' I started it and am still doing it!"

Modern scholarship has largely sided with Snelson. Alec Nevala-Lee's Inventor of the Future (2022) documents the tensegrity appropriation as part of a broader pattern in which Fuller "not only shamelessly appropriated the ideas" but coined neologisms to claim ownership. Valentín Gómez Jáuregui's "Controversial Origins of Tensegrity" (2009) traces the three-way priority dispute among Fuller, Snelson, and the French engineer David Georges Emmerich (who independently developed tensegrity structures as "autotendants" in the late 1950s). An additional historical complication: the Latvian constructivist Karl Ioganson exhibited a proto-tensegrity sculpture in 1920-21, though scholars note it was not truly self-equilibrating.

The dispute was never resolved. Fuller died in 1983, Snelson in 2016. The art world credits Snelson — his sixty-foot Needle Tower (1968) stands at the Hirshhorn Museum, and he received the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. The engineering and architecture world remains more divided; the Buckminster Fuller Institute still presents tensegrity as one of "Fuller's Big Ideas." What is not in dispute is that both men were essential: Snelson made the discovery, and Fuller gave it a name, a theory, and a global audience.
