Southern Illinois University

Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale, the institution that served as Buckminster Fuller's principal academic base from 1959 into the 1970s, where he held a research professorship and where SIU Press published many of his major works.

SIU gave Fuller a durable institutional home during his most publicly influential decades. From Carbondale he taught, wrote, and directed research on world resources and design science, and the university press became one of the primary publishers of his books and of the World Design Science Decade documents.

Role in Fuller's world

SIU is the academic anchor of Fuller's middle-and-late career — the base from which he ran the World Resources Inventory and World Game work, and the press that put much of his thinking into print. It is the institutional counterpart to the itinerant "Guinea Pig B" persona.
