INDEX — Student Publication of the School of Design
A 136-page cumulative author-and-subject index to twenty-five years of the Student Publication of the School of Design — the noted student-edited journal of the School of Design at North Carolina State University — covering Volume 1 (1951) through Volume 25 (1977). Compiled by the Harrye Lyons Design Library (editors Helen K. Zschau and Gloria W. Close) and published April 15, 1977.
About the document
This is a finding aid, not a primary text: it indexes the full run of the Student Publication so a researcher can locate any article by author or subject. The introduction lays out its conventions — author entries give the title followed by volume:issue, pages (e.g. AHO, Arnold J. — "Joy in therapy…" 21:2, p.5-10. il.); subject entries give the title, then author, then the same locator; and titles of entire issues (such as "Forty gardens," "Building skeletons," "The city, form and intent") appear in quotation marks. Editorial additions are bracketed, and a short errata list corrects names in the original run.
It is fully transcribed: all 136 pages — front matter plus the complete alphabetical author/subject entries and per-issue contents listings — were OCR'd via codexis (OpenRouter qwen/qwen2.5-vl-72b-instruct), assembled to LaTeX, and built to the WikiJS-Markdown source page by the codexis pipeline. The original scanned PDF, a typeset-text PDF, and an EPUB edition (codexis/LuaLaTeX builds) sit beside it.
Why it is here (Fuller-adjacent)
The Student Publication of the School of Design was the journal of the NC State School of Design under Dean Henry L. Kamphoefner, one of the most influential American design programs of the mid-twentieth century and a hub of the modernist, structurally-experimental design culture in which R. Buckminster Fuller's geodesic and Dymaxion ideas circulated. The acknowledgements name a faculty roster (Robert P. Burns Jr., Roger Clark, Kamphoefner, Shun Kanda, John Loss, Michael Pause, John Reuer, Brian Shawcroft, Wayne Taylor) representative of that milieu. The index is filed here as a finding aid into that design world — a tool for locating Fuller-relevant and adjacent design-science material across the run, rather than a Fuller text itself.
Why it matters
Cumulative indexes like this are the connective tissue of historical research: without them, a twenty-five-year journal run is effectively unsearchable. As an artifact it also documents the institutional self-awareness of a leading design school cataloguing its own student output. For the Buckyverse it serves as a reference companion to the project's other contemporaneous bibliographic finding aids.
Authorship note
Tagged fuller-adjacent: this is a third-party library index of a design journal, not by or primarily about Fuller. Its value is contextual and navigational — it maps the mid-century design-school milieu surrounding his work.
