Synergetics
Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking is R. Buckminster Fuller's comprehensive attempt to derive a single coordinate system of nature from experience rather than axioms. Working with E. J. Applewhite, Fuller replaces the imaginary straight line and cube of classical geometry with the tetrahedron, the vector, and 60-degree closest-packing of spheres, arguing that synergy — the behavior of whole systems unpredicted by their parts taken separately — is the organizing fact of Universe. The repo holds a WikiJS-formatted edition of the full work, organized into thirteen numbered chapters with front and back matter.
What Synergetics is
Synergetics, as Fuller defines it in chapter 200, "promulgates a system of mensuration employing 60-degree vectorial coordination comprehensive to both physics and chemistry, and to both arithmetic and geometry, in rational whole numbers." It begins from three assumptions: that dimension must be physical, that conceptuality is metaphysical and independent of size, and that "a triangle is a triangle independent of size." Because physical Universe is entirely energetic, all dimension is energetic — so synergetics is an energetic geometry that identifies energy with number and uses 60-degree coordination "because that is nature's way to closest-pack spheres."
The mathematics is topology combined with vectorial geometry, derived from experience rather than from assumed axioms. Fuller's recurring claim is that whole-number, low-integer quantation of "all the important geometries of experience" becomes possible because the tetrahedron, octahedron, rhombic dodecahedron, cube, and vector equilibrium together embrace all the lattices of the atoms. Vectors and tensors constitute all elementary definition.
Structure of the work
The source edition is organized as a numbered-section reference (a hierarchical decimal scheme, e.g. 200.01) wrapped in front matter, thirteen main chapters, and back matter.
- Front matter — Acknowledgements, Scenarios, Explicit Note to the Reader, Preface, Moral of the Work, Author's Note, and the Introduction: The Wellspring of Reality, a manifesto against over-specialization that defines Universe as "the aggregate of all humanity's consciously apprehended and communicated, nonsimultaneous, and only partially overlapping experiences."
- 000.00 Humans in Universe — the human observer's place in the cosmic scenario.
- 100.00 Synergy — synergetic unity; "any four points in Universe are always most economically interrelated" by the tetrahedron, the primitive timeless-sizeless minimum.
- 200.00 Synergetics — the formal definition: 60-degree coordination, experientially founded mathematics, the tetrahedron as the basis of measurement, and the accommodation of nature's paired proclivities (associative-disassociative, convergent-divergent, entropic-syntropic, gravitational-radiational, and so on).
- 300.00 Universe — Universe as a finite but nonsimultaneously conceptual scenario.
- 400.00 System — "A system is the first subdivision of Universe into a conceivable entity," separating all that is inside from all that is outside.
- 500.00 Conceptuality — "Definition requires conceptuality. All local systems are conceptual." Nature itself is treated as conceptual; generalized principles are patterns gleaned from special-case experience.
- 600.00 Structure — "A structure is a self-stabilizing energy-event complex," a system of dynamically stabilized, self-interfering, constellar pattern conservations.
- 700.00 Tensegrity — tensional integrity: all structures, "from the solar system to the atom," are tensegrity structures; islands of compression in a sea of continuous tension.
- 800.00 Operational Mathematics — mathematics conducted as physical operation rather than abstraction.
- 900.00 Modelability — "Synergetics is a book about models"; modelability is topologically conceptual, independent of size.
- 1000.00 Omnitopology — topology of the whole.
- 1100.00 Triangular Geodesics (with Transformational Projection) — geodesic subdivision of the sphere.
- 1200.00 Numerology — the integer relationships pervading the cosmic scenario of "Eternally self-regenerative Universe."

Core ideas
- Synergy. The whole is unpredicted by its parts taken separately. Fuller's teaching demonstration — three hinged triangles folding into a tetrahedral tent whose base is a fourth triangle, so that "1 + 2 = 4" — is the seed image of the entire system.
- The tetrahedron as minimum system. The tetrahedron is the first identifiable "system" — the minimum structural division of Universe into an inside and an outside. Fuller reorders classical mathematics around it: "squaring" is really triangling and "cubing" is really tetrahedroning.
- 60-degree (isotropic vector matrix) coordination. Nature closest-packs spheres at 60 degrees, not 90, so synergetics uses an omnidirectional vector matrix in which the vector equilibrium and tetrahedral models give an "absolute accommodation network of energy articulation."
- Energy as number. Energetic geometry equates energy with number; mass is treated as constant while frequency varies. This yields rational, whole-number accounting of geometric and physical phenomena.
- Conceptuality independent of size. A triangle or a system is what it is regardless of scale; conceptual (metaphysical) experience is syntropic and anticipatorily terminates entropic disorder, while special-case physical experience is entropic.
- Modelability and operational mathematics. Knowledge is to be modeled and operated, not merely symbolized — geometry and topology coordinate all experience, both metaphysical and physical.
Significance
Synergetics is the foundational text of Fuller's whole-system "design science": the geometry from which his geodesic domes, the Dymaxion map, octet trusses, and tensegrity structures all descend. It claims a single coordinate system bridging physics, chemistry, crystallography, and biology through low-integer vectorial accounting, and it reframes mathematics as an experiential, modelable discipline rather than an axiomatic one. Within this corpus it serves as the conceptual master text against which the applied and biographical works can be read.
