Wichita House
The house Fuller refused to sell — a gleaming aluminum prototype that attracted 37,000 orders and never shipped a single one.
The Wichita House — formally the Dymaxion Dwelling Machine — was the closest Buckminster Fuller ever came to putting a mass-produced house on the market. Evolving from his 1929 hexagonal Dymaxion House concept into a round floor plan of 1,017 square feet, the design called for aluminum, steel, and plastic components suspended from a central mast "resembling a giant umbrella," with a highly polished aluminum exterior that required no painting. The entire structure weighed under three tons and was made from aluminum-copper alloys left over from wartime aircraft production. Fuller partnered with the Beech Aircraft Corporation in Wichita, Kansas, which had surplus factory capacity after World War II, and by 1945 the collaboration had produced two prototypes. Fuller intended the house to be assembled in two days from flat-packed components, a radical compression of construction time that anticipated today's modular-housing movement by decades.
A corporation, Fuller Houses Inc., was formed to bring the dwelling to market. Of 15,500 shares issued, roughly 9,000 went to public investors and officers and 1,000 to Beech, while Fuller retained veto power through a special class of B shares. Public enthusiasm was enormous — stock climbed to eighteen dollars a share and company president Jack Gaty projected 60,000 units by late 1947. But the Barwise prototype (the primary test unit) revealed serious defects: the "gentilator," a wind-powered ventilation system, malfunctioned; roof gaps admitted drafts and leaks; plastic windows delaminated; and aluminum corroded where it contacted steel rivets. Fuller exercised his veto, declaring the design "not yet ready" for production. By 1948 the company employed a single person with no commercial contracts, Beech had withdrawn, and 37,000 unfulfilled orders evaporated.
In 1948, William Graham purchased both prototypes and merged them into a single dwelling he christened "the Wichita House." It stood in rural Kansas for decades, gradually deteriorating, until Graham's family donated it to The Henry Ford museum in 1990. A million-dollar restoration reassembled the house from components of both prototypes, original trial systems, and newly fabricated replacement parts. It is now on permanent public display, its floor deck hovering visibly above the ground — a detail senior conservator Clara Deck has called "fundamental" to understanding the design. The Wichita House endures as a monument to both Fuller's ambition and his insistence that nothing leave his hands until it met his own exacting standard, even at the cost of commercial viability.
The corporate structure behind the venture was as ambitious as the design itself. Dymaxion Dwelling Machines Inc. was established in October 1944 as an "organization managed by labor, capital, and science." Fortune estimated the company could produce 250,000 dwellings per year at $6,500 each; TIME reported a target of 200 houses per day by January 1947, with shipping cost to any U.S. location under $100. After the Fortune coverage, Fuller initially claimed 3,500 orders with down payments — a figure he later inflated to 37,000 in retellings, a discrepancy documented by biographer Alec Nevala-Lee. Fuller resigned as Chairman on March 25, 1946, amid growing friction over whether the design was production-ready. An underemphasized factor in the venture's collapse was that most city building codes automatically prohibited houses of this type, creating a regulatory barrier that no amount of engineering refinement could have overcome on its own.
William Graham, the man who purchased both prototypes in 1948, was described as an "agreeably eccentric oil and real estate man" who installed the merged house on his 600-acre property near Andover, Kansas. He made his own architectural additions to the structure, of which Fuller disapproved: "His architectural additions forever grounded this aeroplane." Graham's family donated the house to The Henry Ford museum in 1991. Disassembly began in 1992, with components entering the museum's conservation lab in 1998. The restored exhibit opened in October 2001 and now draws roughly 300,000 annual visitors. In 2012, fatigue cracking was discovered in the aluminum beams — a predictable failure mode, since aluminum, unlike steel, lacks a fatigue limit and will eventually crack under cyclic loading regardless of stress level. Ford Motor Company volunteer technicians assisted in the repair.
