Ephemeralization
The progressive trend of technology toward accomplishing ever more human advantage with ever less material, energy, and time per unit of performance. Fuller's central empirical observation and the foundation of his optimism about humanity's prospects.
Fuller's Definition
Fuller coined "ephemeralization" -- drawing on Arnold Toynbee's concept of "etherealization" -- to name the measurable historical trend of doing more with less. His canonical illustration: a communications satellite weighing a quarter-ton outperforms 175,000 tons of transoceanic copper cable. The principle extends across all technology: each successive design generation achieves greater performance with reduced physical investment. Fuller first articulated the concept in Nine Chains to the Moon (1938) and developed it throughout his career, most prominently in Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth (1969) and Critical Path (1981). In Synergetics, it appears within the "Humans in Universe" prologue (S000) as part of Fuller's argument that humanity's technological capability is outpacing its political and economic organization.
Significance in Synergetics
Ephemeralization is the empirical backbone of Fuller's most consequential claim: that it is now technically feasible to support all of humanity at a standard of living higher than anyone currently enjoys, provided this potential is not blocked by political failure or obsolete economic assumptions. Where Malthusian thinking assumes fixed resources and inevitable scarcity, ephemeralization demonstrates that the relevant resource is not matter but know-how -- and know-how only increases. This principle drives Fuller's design science agenda: every invention should aim to do more with less, extending the ephemeral trend deliberately. It connects directly to his concept of the trimtab -- small, strategically placed design interventions that leverage ephemeralization to produce large systemic effects.
