Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science

Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science is the full name Fuller gave to his life's methodology -- often abbreviated CADS, and frequently shortened to just "design science." The name is itself a manifesto. As H.F.W. Perk unpacked it: "Comprehensive" means starting with wholes, because "nature is all of one piece"; "Anticipatory" means looking well into the future to apprehend forces and factors before they arrive; "Design" means using imagination to intentionally create possibilities that do not yet exist; and "Science" means grounding those imaginative possibilities in the facts of experience. Jay Baldwin, a student of Fuller's, observed that "most designers are not comprehensive, anticipatory only of profits, and rarely scientific" -- a remark that captures both the ambition and the critique embedded in the name.

Fuller's foundational question was: "What are the resources? What are the tasks necessary to make 100% of humanity a success?" He formalized his approach as early as 1927 in a set of Eight Strategies, which he later taught at MIT's Creative Engineering Laboratory in 1956 and published as a course outline in 1950. Strategy 1 (Formulation) grounded the work in synergy, precession, and generalized principles. Strategy 5 (Priority Ranking) established the top priority as "comprehensively packaged advancement of the world-around high-standards-of-living of all men." Strategy 6 (Economics) called for comprehensive chemical resource recirculation -- an idea that anticipated the circular economy by decades. Strategy 8 (Design) integrated all the others and insisted on "pull-up of the bottom vs. austere pull-down of the top," rejecting austerity-driven environmentalism in favor of abundance through better design.

What distinguishes CADS from conventional planning is orientation. Conventional approaches tend toward short-term horizons, reactive responses, mechanistic thinking, overspecialization, and scarcity assumptions. CADS is proactive: it asks "what do we want?" rather than "what don't we want?", motivated by aspiration rather than fear. Hugh Kenner described the method as "working from envisaged wholes inward toward realizable parts," while Yasushi Kajikawa defined it as "the study of how to live on the whole earth without ecologically damaging it." Michael Ben-Eli observed that over Fuller's career, design science evolved into "a potent combination of method, metaphor and myth." The World Game -- later EarthGame and NewWorld Game -- is CADS in practice, with participants collaborating on planetary-scale resource allocation problems. The Global Solutions Lab, now in its twentieth year, continues this tradition. Donella Meadows' influential "leverage points" framework can be read as an intellectual descendant: both seek the highest-impact interventions in complex systems, both insist on whole-system thinking, and both privilege paradigm shifts over parametric adjustments.
