Generalized Principles

Truths that hold without exception in every special case -- Fuller's "eternal" operating laws of Universe, discoverable only by mind.

Fuller's Definition

"A generalized principle holds true in every case. If there is one single exception, then it is no longer a generalized principle. No one generalization ever contradicts another generalization in any respect. They are all interaccommodating" (S220.04). "The physical Universe is a self-regenerative process. Its regenerative interrelationships and intertransformings are governed by a complex code of weightless, generalized principles. The principles are metaphysical" (S220.05). They are eternal and timeless: "To be classifiable as 'generalized,' principles cannot terminate or go on vacation. If indeed they are generalized, they are eternal, timeless" (S220.05).

"Principles are entirely and only intellectually discernible" (S220.02) -- they are weightless, metaphysical, and apprehensible only by mind, never by the physical senses alone. "The only reality is the abstraction of principles, the eternal generalized principles" (S220.12). They are also practical: "Pure principles are usable. They are reducible from theory to practice" (S220.03).

Significance in Synergetics

The distinction between generalized principles and special cases is the epistemological backbone of synergetics. Generalized principles are metaphysical, syntropic, and pattern-conserving; special cases are physical, entropic, and energy-dispersing. Fuller holds that "the quantized physical case is entropic, while the metaphysical generalized conceptioning induced by the generalized content of the information is syntropic" (S200.06). Mind discovers the principles; brain stores the special-case experiences. Every experimentally verified law of physics -- gravity, leverage, precession, conservation of energy -- is a generalized principle if it holds in every case without exception.

This framework drives Fuller's practical method: design science proceeds by discovering generalized principles and then applying them to special-case problems. The synergetics hierarchy of polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, vector equilibrium, and their modular subdivisions) is itself an expression of generalized principles -- "the eternally invariable" volumetric ratios of 1, 2-1/2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (S100.321). Because they are omni-interaccommodative, the principles collectively constitute a self-consistent cosmic code that governs all regenerative transformations.
