Precession

The effect of any moving system upon any other moving system, typically producing resultants at 90 degrees to the line of applied force. Fuller generalized this from gyroscopic physics into a life principle: the most important consequences of purposeful action arrive sideways.

Fuller's Definition

"The effects of all components of Universe in motion upon any other component in motion is precession, and inasmuch as all the component patterns of Universe seem to be motion patterns, in whatever degree they affect one another, they are interaffecting one another precessionally, and they are bringing about angular resultants other than the 180 degreenesses." (S533.01)

Fuller elaborates: "The Sun's direct 180-degreeness interattraction pull upon Earth begets precessionally the latter's 90-degreeness orbiting around the Sun. And Earth's circumferential orbiting direction begets Earth's own 90-degreeness of axial rotation." (S533.09) Gravity's straight-line pull produces orbits at right angles; 180-degree efforts consistently yield 90-degree effects (S533.08).

Significance in Synergetics

Fuller elevated precession from a specialized physics term into a generalized principle governing all interrelationships in Universe. His signature illustration: the honeybee flies directly toward nectar (its "purpose"), and cross-pollinates flowers at 90 degrees to its flight path -- the precessional side effect turns out to be the ecologically significant event. Fuller extended this to livelihood: pursue the work that genuinely matters, and let sustenance arrive precessionally as a 90-degree consequence rather than a head-on goal. This reframes "side effects" as the main show -- Sun radiation precesses into wind, wind precesses windmills into rotation, and so on through cascading 90-degree transformations (S533.10-533.12). Precession is regenerative: each 90-degree effect begets another, producing the wave phenomena that propagate throughout Universe (S533.04).
