Fuller's Coined & Redefined Terms

A plain-language dictionary of ~55 of Buckminster Fuller's coined and redefined terms — words he invented outright (Dymaxion, tensegrity, ephemeralization, livingry, GRUNCH) and ordinary words he bent to his own meaning (Universe, system, precession, wealth, integrity). Each entry leads with an accessible definition, gives the etymology/derivation where it illuminates, and links to the Buckyverse articles where the term lives. The on-ramp to Fuller's private language; for exhaustive card-by-card definitions in his own words, see the Synergetics Dictionary dataset.

Fuller's Coined & Redefined Terms

Fuller built his own language. Some words he invented outright (Dymaxion, tensegrity, ephemeralization, livingry, GRUNCH); others he redefined against ordinary usage (Universe, system, precession, wealth, integrity). That private vocabulary is the single biggest barrier to reading him — so this is a plain-language dictionary: each entry leads with an accessible definition, notes the derivation where it helps, and links to the article where the term is used. For exhaustive, card-by-card definitions in Fuller's own words, query the Synergetics Dictionary dataset (E. J. Applewhite, ~20,900 cards).

E

  • Energetic-Synergetic Geometry — Fuller's full name for synergetics: a geometry derived from energy behaviors (closest packing, vectors, frequency) rather than from abstract axioms. → Synergetics
  • Ephemeralization — "doing more with less": the historical tendency of technology to accomplish ever more human advantage with ever less material, energy, and time. → Nine Chains to the Moon, Operating Manual

F

  • 4D — Fuller's early (1920s) term for time-based, anticipatory "fourth-dimension" design thinking — the frame of the 4D Timelock and the 4D (Dymaxion) House. → 4D Timelock
  • Frequency — in synergetics, the number of modular subdivisions of a system; Fuller's way of describing a structure's "size" by how finely it is subdivided rather than by absolute measure. → Synergetics, Geodesic Math

G

  • Generalized Principle — an experimentally-verified principle true in every case without exception (leverage, precession, etc.); Fuller's "eternal" operating laws of Universe. → Synergetics, Everything I Know
  • Geodesic (dome) — Fuller's application of geodesic (great-circle paths) to architecture: self-supporting shells spanning via a triangulated great-circle grid. → Geodesic Math
  • Great Circle — the shortest path on a sphere (a circle whose plane passes through the center); the "geodesic" lines whose triangulation makes a geodesic dome rigid. → Geodesic Math
  • GRUNCH — "Gross Universal Cash Heist": his name for the faceless, supranational corporate power he saw governing finance and politics. → Grunch of Giants
  • Guinea Pig B — Fuller's name for himself as a lifelong, fully documented experiment ("B" for Bucky) testing what one penniless individual can do on behalf of all humanity. → Guinea Pig B

I

  • Integrity — Fuller's load-bearing value: structural and moral wholeness and truthfulness (the "-tegrity" of tensegrity); a recurring ethical demand as much as an engineering one. → Guinea Pig B
  • Isotropic Vector Matrix (IVM) — the all-space-filling array of equal-length vectors (the lines joining closest-packed sphere centers) that Fuller treats as the natural coordinate framework of Universe. Isotropic = the same in every direction. → Synergetics

J

  • Jitterbug — the transformation in which the vector equilibrium contracts and twists, collapsing through the icosahedron, octahedron, and tetrahedron — Fuller's model of structural phase change. → Synergetics: A New Hope, Synergetics

K

  • Killingry / Livingry — Fuller's paired coinages: killingry (weaponry and destructive technology) versus livingry (technology that serves and sustains life). Redirecting the world's resources from one to the other is his central call. → Critical Path

M

  • Mites, Sytes & Couplers — the small assemblies of A & B modules (the Mite is the minimum all-space-filling unit) from which Fuller builds larger symmetric forms. → Synergetics
  • More with Less ("doing more with less") — the plain statement of ephemeralization and of Fuller's whole thesis: applied design can serve everyone from the same resources. → Operating Manual, Utopia or Oblivion
