Pattern Integrity
A pattern possesses its own integrity independent of any particular material embodiment. What persists through time is not substance but relational configuration -- the knot, not the rope; the wave, not the water; you, not your atoms.
Fuller's Definition
"A pattern has an integrity independent of the medium by virtue of which you have received the information that it exists. Each of the chemical elements is a pattern integrity. Each individual is a pattern integrity. The pattern integrity of the human individual is evolutionary and not static." (S505.201)
Fuller illustrates the concept through sailor's knots: atomic elements are "uniquely complex pattern[s] of energy event interrelatednesses" analogous to knots tied in rope, where the knot's identity persists regardless of the rope material, and external forces pulling the rope's ends only tighten the knot further (S505.21). Waves provide a second demonstration: "The same stone dropped successively in pools of water, milk, or gasoline will generate the same wave patterns. Yet the waves are essences neither of milk nor of water nor of gasoline." (S505.32)
Significance in Synergetics
Pattern integrity is Fuller's bridge between the physical and the metaphysical. It answers the question of identity in a universe where all matter is in constant flux -- you replace virtually all your atoms over time, yet "you" persist as a self-interfering pattern of energy events. This principle underlies Fuller's insistence that Universe is verb, not noun: reality consists not of static things but of dynamic, self-sustaining patterns. It provides the conceptual foundation for understanding why structures like tensegrity and the vector equilibrium work -- they are pattern integrities whose geometric relationships hold regardless of scale or material.
