The Design Science Primer is a practical guide to Fuller's Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science (CADS) methodology — the process of applying experimentally verified generalized principles through comprehensive, anticipatory design to serve all humanity. Where Fuller's own writings on design science are scattered across multiple books and lectures, this primer consolidates the methodology into a teachable, step-by-step framework.

Gabel, who directed the World Game Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania and later founded the World Game Institute, learned design science directly from Fuller. The book distills decades of applying the methodology to real-world problems — energy, food, shelter, health — into a format accessible to students, educators, and practitioners.

The Design Science Process

The primer presents design science as a structured problem-solving discipline:

  1. Define the problem comprehensively — understand it in its widest context, not as an isolated local issue
  2. Inventory relevant resources — what exists, what trends are underway, what generalized principles apply
