Nature's omnidirectional coordinate system based on 60-degree angles derived from the closest packing of equal-radius spheres, replacing the artificial 90-degree XYZ grid.

60-Degree Coordination

Nature closest-packs spheres at 60 degrees, not 90. Synergetics replaces the cube and the right-angle grid with a 60-degree vectorial coordinate system derived from the way equal spheres actually nestle together.

Fuller's Definition

"Synergetics promulgates a system of mensuration employing 60-degree vectorial coordination comprehensive to both physics and chemistry, and to both arithmetic and geometry, in rational whole numbers" (§200.01). "Energetic geometry employs 60-degree coordination because that is nature's way to closest-pack spheres" (§200.03).

The physical demonstration is immediate: "If we take three billiard balls on a flat table, we find that they compact beautifully into a triangle. If we arrange four of them on a billiard table in a square, they tend to be restless and roll around each other. If compacted into a condition of stability, the four form a 60-degree-angled diamond shape made of two stable triangles" (§410.12). In three dimensions, "the closest packing of unit radius spheres always associates in omnitriangulations of 60 degrees, whether in planar or omnidirectional arrays. Six unit radius spheres pack most tightly around one sphere on a billiard table. Twelve unit radius spheres compact around one sphere in omnidirectional closest packing" (§410.11).

Fuller derived this from extending Avogadro's hypothesis: if under identical energy conditions all elements disclose the same number of somethings per given volume, and if all vectors representing those energy conditions are equal, "then all the vectors would be the same length and all of them would interact at the same angle" -- producing the isotropic vector matrix with its omnidirectional 60-degree triangulation (§410.06).

Significance in Synergetics

The 60-degree coordinate system is what makes synergetics rational. Where the 90-degree XYZ system requires irrational numbers for basic volumes (the cube-diagonal is the square root of 2), Fuller's system yields whole-number volumes for all principal polyhedra: tetrahedron = 1, octahedron = 4, vector equilibrium = 20. The shift from 90 degrees to 60 degrees is not a preference but an observation: equal spheres pressed together never form a square checkerboard. The entire coordinate system follows from this physical fact, grounding geometry in nature's own closest-packing behavior.
