Triangulation

The triangle is the only inherently self-stabilizing polygon; therefore triangulation -- not material solidity -- is what makes structure.

Triangulation

The triangle is the only polygon that holds its shape with rigid sides and flexible joints. A square collapses; a triangle cannot. Structure is therefore not a property of solid material but of triangulated pattern integrity.

Fuller's Definition

"A structure is a self-stabilizing energy-event complex" (§600.02). "By structure, we mean a self-stabilizing pattern. The triangle is the only self-stabilizing polygon" (§610.01). "By structure, we mean omnitriangulated. The triangle is the only structure. Unless it is self-regeneratively stabilized, it is not a structure" (§610.02).

Fuller demonstrates this with the necklace model: rigid tubes strung on a flexible tension cable. A six-sided necklace drapes; a five-sided necklace drapes; but a three-sided necklace -- the triangle -- is rigid (§608.01-608.04). Each side of the triangle acts as a lever fulcrumed at one corner, seizing the ends of the two levers at the opposite corner, stabilizing it "at minimum effort" (§608.03). "Structure is a self-stabilizing, pattern-integrity complex. Only the triangle produces structure and structure means only triangle; and vice versa" (§608.05).

The consequence is absolute: "Any polygon with more than three sides is unstable. Only the triangle is inherently stable. Any polyhedron bounded by polygonal faces with more than three sides is unstable. Only polyhedra bounded by triangular faces are inherently stable" (§609.01). The three omnitriangulated polyhedra -- tetrahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron -- are the only stable structural systems (§608.10).

Significance in Synergetics

Triangulation is the structural principle that governs everything from the octet truss to the geodesic dome. Fuller's insight that structure is pattern, not substance -- that "structures are not things" but "event constellations" (§601.02) -- depends entirely on the triangle's unique self-stabilizing property. This redefines engineering: the question is never "how thick is the material?" but "is the geometry triangulated?" A necklace-strung geodesic sphere, omnitriangulated, is rigid; the same number of struts assembled as squares collapses. Triangulation is the bridge between Fuller's abstract geometry and his built structures.
