An alphabetically sorted glossary of key terms, concepts, inventions, structures, organizations, and publications found across the Buckyverse wiki -- the knowledge base on R. A
A and B Quanta Modules -- The two irregular tetrahedra, each 1/24 the volume of a regular tetrahedron, that serve as the minimum volumetric "atoms" from which every symmetric form in synergetics is assembled. See: A and B Quanta Modules
Air-Ocean World Map -- Fuller's name for the Dymaxion Map, a polyhedral projection of the globe onto an icosahedron that unfolds to show the continents as one nearly contiguous island with minimal size distortion. See: Dymaxion Map
All-Space Filling -- The property of polyhedra that tile three-dimensional space without gaps; in synergetics, the Mite (Minimum Tetrahedron) is the simplest all-space filler, and the 24-tetravolume Duo-Tet Cube completes what the Vector Equilibrium's 20-ness alone cannot. See: All-Space Filling
Anticipatory Design -- Designing for human needs before they become crises rather than reacting after the fact; the "anticipatory" in Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science. See: Design Science
Aspension -- A dome built as separately ascending suspension layers, each tensionally hung from the one below -- a tensegrity dome, from Fuller's contraction of "ascending suspension." See: Fuller's Coined Terms
B
Biotensegrity -- The application of Fuller's tensegrity structural principle to biological organisms, modeling cells, musculoskeletal systems, and structures from viruses to vertebrates as self-organizing tension-compression networks. See: Biotensegrity
Black Mountain College -- The experimental college in North Carolina (1933-1957) where Fuller taught in the summers of 1948 and 1949, building his first geodesic dome and intersecting with Kenneth Snelson's tensegrity work. See: Black Mountain College
Buckminster Fuller Institute -- The nonprofit organization that stewards Buckminster Fuller's legacy, preserving his archive-derived ideas and advancing design science through the annual Buckminster Fuller Challenge and related programs. See: Buckminster Fuller Institute
Buckminsterfullerene -- The C60 carbon molecule, a cage of 60 carbon atoms at the vertices of a truncated icosahedron (soccer-ball shape), named after Fuller because its structure resembles his geodesic domes; commonly called the "buckyball." See: Buckminsterfullerene
C
Chronofile (Dymaxion Chronofile) -- Fuller's exhaustive, minute-by-minute archive of his own life -- letters, bills, clippings, notes -- kept from 1917, constituting the raw data of the "Guinea Pig B" experiment. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Cipher -- Fuller's pointed word for zero or nothing, warning that much of mathematics and economics trades in abstractions cut loose from physical reality. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Closest Packing of Spheres -- The physical fact that equal-radius spheres nest most densely as twelve around one nucleus, forming the Vector Equilibrium -- the experiential origin from which Fuller derived the whole of synergetics. See: Closest Packing of Spheres
Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science -- Fuller's core program: anticipate humanity's needs and meet them through comprehensive design that wrings maximum service from minimum resource, rather than through politics or reform. See: Design Science
Comprehensivity -- The generalist's capacity to question, conceptualize, and act on whole systems; Fuller's antidote to crippling over-specialization. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Concentric Hierarchy -- The nested set of symmetric polyhedra whose volumes, measured with the tetrahedron as unity, come out as exact integers: tetrahedron = 1, cube = 3, octahedron = 4, rhombic dodecahedron = 6, vector equilibrium = 20. See: Concentric Hierarchy
Cosmic Accounting (Cosmic Costing) -- Pricing things by their true energy and resource cost to the cosmos over astronomical time, not by market price. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Coupler -- An assembly of Mites and Sytes that fills all space, composed entirely of A and B Quanta Modules and serving as a higher-order all-space filler in synergetics. See: All-Space Filling
Critical Path -- The sequence of enabling steps by which a world-scale change actually becomes possible; both a generalized concept and the title of Fuller's late magnum opus (1981). See: Fuller's Coined Terms
D
Design Science -- Fuller's discipline of solving global problems by applying generalized principles through whole-system, future-oriented design rather than through politics, named in full Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science. See: Design Science
Drop City -- The 1960s artists' commune near Trinidad, Colorado, famous for building Fuller-inspired geodesic domes from salvaged car tops and becoming a symbol of countercultural experimentation with dome living. See: Drop City
Duo-Tet Cube -- The double-tetrahedron cube of 24 tetravolumes that completes the all-space-filling gap left by the Vector Equilibrium's 20-ness, representing the union of "maximum somethingness" with total spatial accounting. See: All-Space Filling
Dwelling Machine -- A mass-produced, deliverable house treated like an appliance -- shelter as a manufactured product rather than site-built craft -- Fuller's term for the Dymaxion/Wichita House concept. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Dymaxion -- Fuller's trademark portmanteau of "dynamic," "maximum," and "tension" (coined by a marketer), applied to his House, Car, Bathroom, and Map -- designs wringing maximum performance from minimum material. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Dymaxion Car -- Fuller's 1933 three-wheeled, aerodynamic experimental vehicle built with naval architect W. Starling Burgess as the "ground-taxiing phase" of a future flying, driving Omni-Medium Transport. See: Dymaxion Car
Dymaxion Deployment Unit -- Fuller's 1940 circular corrugated-steel emergency shelter adapted from grain-bin technology, mass-produced by Butler Manufacturing for the U.S. military during World War II. See: Dymaxion Deployment Unit
Dymaxion House -- Fuller's mass-producible, self-sufficient single-family dwelling suspended from a central mast, first designed in the 1920s and prototyped after World War II as the Wichita House. See: Dymaxion House
Dymaxion Map -- Fuller's polyhedral world-map projection onto an icosahedron that unfolds to show the continents as one nearly contiguous island with minimal shape and size distortion; also called the Air-Ocean World Map. See: Dymaxion Map
E
Energetic-Synergetic Geometry -- Fuller's full name for synergetics: a geometry derived from energy behaviors (closest packing, vectors, frequency) rather than from abstract axioms. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Ephemeralization -- "Doing more with less": the historical tendency of technology to accomplish ever more human advantage with ever less material, energy, and time per unit of performance -- Fuller's central empirical observation and the foundation of his optimism. See: Ephemeralization
F
4D -- Fuller's early (1920s) term for time-based, anticipatory "fourth-dimension" design thinking, the frame of the 4D Timelock and the 4D (Dymaxion) House. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Frameless Geodesic Dome -- Bruce Hauman's low-cost, self-supporting dome design derived from Fuller's principles, using plywood panels without a separate structural frame. See: Frameless Geodesic Dome
Frequency -- The number of modular subdivisions along a system's edge; Fuller's way of expressing size not as absolute length but as how finely a structure is subdivided, so that a 2-frequency geodesic has twice as many edge modules as a 1-frequency. See: Frequency
Froebel's Gifts -- The sequenced set of geometric play objects Friedrich Froebel designed for his kindergarten, credited with shaping the spatial intuition of modernist designers including the young Fuller, who discovered the structural primacy of the triangle through Froebel's "peas and sticks" gift. G
Generalized Principles -- Experimentally verified truths that hold in every case without exception -- the eternal, weightless, metaphysical laws governing all physical transformations in Universe, discoverable only by mind. See: Generalized Principles
Geodesic Dome (Geodesic Structures) -- Self-supporting shells that span space by triangulating great-circle arcs into a compound-curved grid; the geodesic dome encloses the most volume with the least surface area and material, growing stronger as frequency increases. See: Geodesic Structures
Goldberg-Coxeter Construction -- A graph operation that subdivides polyhedral faces with a lattice of triangles, squares, or hexagons, unifying the mathematics behind geodesic domes, Goldberg polyhedra, and fullerene molecules into a single framework. See: Goldberg-Coxeter Construction
Goldberg Polyhedron -- A convex polyhedron of exactly twelve pentagons and any number of hexagons with icosahedral symmetry -- the geometric dual of a geodesic sphere and the shape underlying buckminsterfullerene (C60). See: Goldberg Polyhedron
Great Circles -- The shortest path on a sphere, a circle whose plane passes through the center; three-way triangulated intersections of great circles generate the grids that give geodesic structures their strength. See: Great Circles
GRUNCH -- "Gross Universal Cash Heist": Fuller's name for the faceless, supranational corporate power he saw governing global finance and politics, the subject of his late polemic Grunch of Giants (1983). See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Guinea Pig B -- Fuller's name for himself as a lifelong, fully documented experiment ("B" for Bucky) testing what one penniless individual can do on behalf of all humanity. See: Fuller's Coined Terms

Integrity -- Fuller's load-bearing value: structural and moral wholeness and truthfulness -- the "-tegrity" of tensegrity -- a recurring ethical demand as much as an engineering one. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Isotropic Vector Matrix (IVM) -- The all-space-filling lattice of equal-length vectors joining the centers of closest-packed unit-radius spheres, which Fuller treats as nature's own coordinate framework in place of the XYZ cube; "isotropic" meaning everywhere the same energy conditions. J
Jitterbug Transformation -- The symmetrical contraction in which the Vector Equilibrium twists inward through the icosahedron, octahedron, and tetrahedron -- Fuller's articulable model of structural phase change, named after the 1930s-40s swing dance because the equatorial rotation reverses direction at each pass through zero. K
Killingry / Livingry -- Fuller's paired coinages: killingry (weaponry and destructive technology) versus livingry (technology that serves and sustains life); redirecting the world's resources from one to the other is his central call to action. See: Fuller's Coined Terms

Livingry -- Technology that serves and sustains life, as opposed to killingry (weaponry); Fuller's term for the class of artifacts design science should produce. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
M
MartianMath -- Kirby Urner's Python-based teaching sequence for synergetics, structured as Jupyter notebooks, where the playful name signals that this geometry comes from outside the Euclidean/Cartesian tradition. See: School of Tomorrow
Mecon -- Fuller's name for the truncated octahedron, a 14-faced Archimedean solid of eight hexagonal and six square faces that fills three-dimensional space without gaps. See: Truncated Octahedron
Mite (Minimum Tetrahedron) -- An irregular tetrahedron composed of two A Modules and one B Module (AAB), the simplest all-space-filling unit in synergetics and the volumetric quantum from which larger forms are built. See: A and B Quanta Modules
Montreal Biosphere -- Fuller's Expo '67 U.S. Pavilion geodesic dome in Montreal, whose acrylic skin burned away in 1976 but whose steel geodesic frame survived and was reborn in 1995 as an environment museum. See: Montreal Biosphere
More with Less -- The plain statement of ephemeralization and Fuller's whole thesis: applied design can serve everyone from the same resources by doing progressively more with progressively less. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
N
Nine Chains to the Moon -- Fuller's first book (1938), a wide-ranging introduction to his thinking about rationalization, phantom captains, and "more with less," whose title refers to the proposition that if all humanity stood on each other's shoulders, the chain would reach the moon. O
Octet Truss -- Fuller's 1961 patented space-frame of alternating octahedra and tetrahedra -- the Isotropic Vector Matrix realized as a rigid, lightweight structural lattice that distributes loads as pure tension and compression along its members. See: Octet Truss
Omnidirectional Halo -- Fuller's concept of the spherical shell of thought surrounding a thinker -- all-directions-at-once awareness -- and an essay arguing that epistemology itself generates a new cosmology. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Operational Mathematics -- Geometry derived from physical operation on real systems -- drawing, scribing, folding, building -- rather than from assumed axioms or imaginary entities such as dimensionless points or infinitely extended planes. See: Operational Mathematics
P
Pattern Integrity -- A pattern possesses its own integrity independent of the medium through which it is propagated: the knot, not the rope; the wave, not the water; you, not your atoms -- Fuller's answer to what is real. See: Pattern Integrity
Phantom Captain -- From Nine Chains to the Moon: the invisible, weightless intelligence (mind) that pilots the human "mechanism," illustrating Fuller's distinction between the metaphysical pattern and the physical vehicle. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Precession -- The effect of a body in motion on other bodies in motion at angles other than 180 degrees; Fuller generalized this from gyroscopic physics into a life principle: the most important consequences of purposeful action arrive sideways, at 90 degrees. See: Precession
Q
Quadray Coordinates -- A four-axis coordinate system native to the tetrahedron, offered by Kirby Urner as an alternative to both Cartesian XYZ and Fuller's own vector notation for teaching synergetics computationally. See: School of Tomorrow
R
Regenerative Universe -- Fuller's view that Universe is eternally regenerative -- continuously recycling and reorganizing energy rather than running down -- the physical ground of his optimism that design science can succeed. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
S
Scenario Universe -- Universe as a non-simultaneous, ever-unfolding "scenario" like a film, not a single still frame -- the relativistic picture Fuller adopted from Einstein; you cannot get out of Universe, only out of systems. See: Universe
School of Tomorrow -- Kirby Urner's cross-disciplinary K-16 framework for teaching synergetics through Python and computational geometry, the most active effort to translate Fuller's geometry into executable STEAM education. See: School of Tomorrow
60-Degree Coordination -- Nature's omnidirectional coordinate system based on 60-degree angles derived from the closest packing of equal-radius spheres, replacing the artificial 90-degree XYZ grid and yielding whole-number volumes for all principal polyhedra. See: 60-Degree Coordination
Spaceship Earth -- The planet conceived as a finite, integrated vehicle "without an operating manual," requiring comprehensive, anticipatory stewardship of its resources for all passengers. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Synergetics -- Fuller's experientially founded "geometry of thinking": a single coordinate system of nature based on 60-degree closest-packing and the tetrahedron as the unit of volume, presented in his two-volume magnum opus (with E. Synergetics Constant (S3) -- The conversion factor between the Isotropic Vector Matrix volume system and the Cartesian XYZ volume system, used in Kirby Urner's computational curriculum to bridge the two frameworks. See: School of Tomorrow
Synergy -- The behavior of whole systems unpredicted by the behavior of their parts taken separately -- the organizing principle from which synergetics takes its name, exemplified by alloys whose strength exceeds the sum of their components' strengths. See: Synergy
Syntropy -- The complement of entropy: the local, anticipatory, metaphysical ordering and concentration of energy and information, as opposed to entropic dispersal -- what mind does when it discovers generalized principles. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
System -- The first subdivision of Universe into an inside, an outside, and everything irrelevant; all systems are polyhedra, and the tetrahedron is the minimum system -- four points, six edges, four faces. See: System
Syte -- An assembly of two Mites (Minimum Tetrahedra) that is itself an all-space filler, an intermediate step between the Mite and the Coupler in the hierarchy of synergetic space-filling forms. See: All-Space Filling
T
10F-squared + 2 -- The formula governing the number of spheres in any outer shell of the Vector Equilibrium, where F is the edge frequency; it connects closest packing directly to the concentric hierarchy. See: Frequency
Tensegrity -- "Tensional integrity": structures of isolated compression members (struts) suspended within a continuous network of tension (cables) -- "islands of compression in a sea of tension" -- a structural principle Fuller named and patented in the 1960s. See: Tensegrity
Tetrahedron (Minimum System) -- The tetrahedron as the simplest structural system -- four vertices, six edges, four triangular faces -- dividing Universe into insideness and outsideness, and serving as Fuller's replacement for the cube as the basic unit of volume. See: Tetrahedron as Minimum System
Triangulation -- The principle that the triangle is the only inherently self-stabilizing polygon; therefore triangulation, not material solidity, is what makes structure -- a square collapses, a triangle cannot. See: Triangulation
Trimtab -- The tiny control-surface tab that, with minuscule effort, turns an entire ship or aircraft; Fuller's metaphor for how one individual can pivot society, and his chosen epitaph: "Call Me Trimtab." See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Triton City -- Fuller's 1960s tetrahedronal floating-city proposal, engineered to house thousands of residents on the water and endorsed by the U.S. Navy before administrative delays shelved the project. See: Triton City
Truncated Octahedron (Mecon) -- A 14-faced Archimedean solid of eight regular hexagons and six squares that Fuller called the "mecon"; notable as one of the space-filling polyhedra that tiles three-dimensional space without gaps. See: Truncated Octahedron
U
Universe -- "The aggregate of all humanity's consciously apprehended and communicated, nonsimultaneous, and only partially overlapping experiences" -- not "everything that exists" but everything experienced and communicated; an ever-unfolding scenario, finite yet nonsimultaneously conceptual. V
Vector Equilibrium (VE) -- Fuller's name for the cuboctahedron formed by twelve spheres closest-packed around one, in which all radial and circumferential vectors are equal -- the zero-phase equilibrium of forces, his reference state of structure, with a volume of exactly 20 tetravolumes. W
Wave -- Fuller insisted physical reality is wave-based: no "solids," no straight lines; structure is frequency and angle, energy in periodic motion. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
Wealth (Fuller's Redefinition) -- Not money, but the organized technological and energy capability to sustain forward days of human life; money is only a claim-check on true wealth. See: Fuller's Coined Terms
World Game -- Fuller's cooperative educational simulation (1961) in which players use his Dymaxion Map and global resource data to solve world problems for 100% of humanity, conceived as an alternative to military war games. See: World Game
World Game Institute -- The organization founded in 1972 in Philadelphia by Fuller, Medard Gabel, and others to institutionalize and carry forward the World Game simulation and its global resource research. See: World Game Institute
X-Z
Zome -- A zonohedron-based building form originated by Steve Baer, extending Fuller's principles into a different geometric family and commercialized through his company Zomeworks. See: Zomeworks
