28 Isamu Noguchi and E=mc2
2 R. Buckminster Fuller’s lifelong and best friend was the sculptor Isamu Noguchi. ‘‘I first met Mr. Fuller, as I used to call him,’’ said Noguchi, at Romany Marie’s restaurant in 1929. ‘‘Some time later, I found an old laundry room on top of a building on Madison Avenue and 29th Street with windows all around. Under Bucky’s sway I painted the whole place silver so that one was almost blinded by the lack of shadows. There I made his portrait head in chrome-plated bronze—also form without shadow.

He often went without sleep for several days, and he didn’t always eat either. Bucky’s zest for life is part and parcel of his creativity. However, he has the capacity and resolution to come to grips in unknown hours and retreats of the mind to fathom new secrets from the universe.’’
5 Once Noguchi, who was then in Mexico City, asked Bucky, in New York, to ‘‘please wire me rush Einstein’s formula and explanation thereof.’’ With his last ten dollars, Bucky sent the Western Union reply on page 369 to his friend.
